Eritrean Soldiers Continue to Control Schools in Tigray’s Erob Woreda

All Ethiopia

As of today, 23 schools in Tigray’s Erob Woreda remain under the control of Eritrean soldiers, despite the Pretoria agreement, according to a report by Tigray TV. This information has also been confirmed by the well-known news aggregator, Tikvah Ethiopia.

In areas of Erob Woreda experiencing relative peace, students are preparing to sit for the national high school leaving exam next month. These students are in locations managed by the Interim Regional Administration of Tigray.

The Erob Woreda Educational Bureau has reported that these 23 schools, previously under its administration, have been controlled by Eritrean soldiers for over three years. The current conditions of the students in these schools are unknown.

Testimonies from teachers and students reveal that essential services, such as electricity, water supply, transportation, and internet, are nonexistent. Despite these dire circumstances, students are preparing for the upcoming national exam.

The report highlights that the war in Tigray has devastated the educational facilities and sector. The Erob Woreda Educational Bureau has urged the Ethiopian government to ensure the full implementation of the Pretoria agreement and to free the schools under Eritrean control.

The Bureau has also appealed to all governmental and non-governmental stakeholders for support to aid the students striving to take the national exam, despite the lack of educational materials and favorable conditions.
